As most of you know, under both SafeStat and CSA 2010, cargo securement is a major deal.  It is important that every driver uses the correct number and type of cargo securement devices and that they are not defective. Many of our write ups for securement violations come from defective 4″ straps. Drivers tend to hang onto 4″ straps longer than they should, often citing cost as the reason.  We want that to change.

Effective immediately, the Mercer Company Store will sell 4″x30′ straps for $10.00. No limit. But it gets better: If you turn in a used 4″ strap, the new one will cost you $8.00.  Again, no limit.  We want defective straps off of all Mercer units. This is open to Mercer drivers and contractors only.  This is your chance eliminate defective strap write ups in a pretty cost effective way. Go for it.

Thats awsome. I’ve been online all day trying to find the best price on straps. Just wish this was happening last week when I was there. Now I just need a load thru Louisville. Can we get red straps to match my truck? lol

What are you going to do when your red straps fade, and they’re pink? 🙂

Thank you this was one of my real worries with CSA2010, the cost of pleasing overzealous inspectors. Already re-newed my straps last month but will definitely use this program in the future. GREAT IDEA by someone!!!

    Len What about 2in straps??????

  10. April 12, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Hey Jason I think that a great idea. Is the store going to have plenty of straps on hand. We just replace 10 of them, but we would like to trade in the old ones so we have extra ones on hand. We just now need to get to the store. I do get one question. How do you know when a strap is to wore out? What I might think is not or is might not be what DOT think is. We don’t want to be in that gray area. Where DOT might question. thanks

The D.O.T. allows up to a 3/4″ tear in a strap. The tricky part of that is that the D.O.T. will add up multiple tears in a strap. If the combined tears equal more than 3/4″, then you are written up. Also remember that it is totally up to the officer. We have been dinged on tears that were just 1/2″. I wouldn’t chance using a strap that had any kind of tear in it.

Just as a NOTE of information for those folks that do not often get to our great lil store,,, Freightliner Stealer$hip in Savannah,Ga. usually stocks the (yellow, sorry, lol) 5,000 lb. rated 4″ x 30′ straps @ $9.99 ea. An easy stop off of I-95 at exit 109 across from the Pete dealership there. Also, the 2″ x 27’s w/ratchets I think are $13.99 ea.

Bill, we are in the process of reviewing all securement device pricing, including 2″ straps. I expect to have the same type of deal on those…..a reduced price plus an exchange price. More will be out in the next few days. Bottom line is that we don’t want ANY defective securement devices on Mercer units. If you don’t have ’em, you can’t use ’em. A defective or missing strap is 36 points (10+2oos x3). Big hit for a single problem. Bad news for the driver and for Mercer. We cannot have days like that.
