Alabama Steel Coil Certification

Starting next week, I will be receiving specific information concerning Mercer drivers on how to comply with a new Alabama law that will take effect in June.  Any driver that plans to haul steel coils that load or unload in Alabama, will need to be certified by the state of Alabama to do so.  To get the certification, drivers will have to go on-line, take a 45 minute course, pass a test, and pay $10-$15.  Once the driver receives the certificate, he or she will need to send the certificate to Mercer, then we countersign it.  We keep a copy in the driver qualifications file, and return the original to the driver.  This is going to be an absolute must, if you ever plan to load or empty coils in the state of Alabama.  I will update you again next week with some more specific details.

    ok…when will it end…certification to haul coils???? what is a CDL is it not certification of qualification…what next?? certification to pump fuel into your tanks??? give us a break already…you hit us with fees for doubles,hazmat,tanker,twic,and background check plus port cards and just breathing…this turnip has no more blood to give..

    I have not hauled a coil since becoming Mercerized but I know how. Can I get $10 also?

    Starting to run out of room in the “required card wallet”. again a case of a few bad apples (dont care, in a hurry, etc) causing grief and Money for us all.

    I have to agree with John,Whats next?????? TWIC no one wants to see it -passport-card—–same thing all they want to see is driver lic, and yes Jason I have hauled coils.

    Sorry guys. I think the unfortunate part of this, is that other states will see the revenue that Alabama brings in off of this deal, and they will follow. I wonder if they do care about safety, or they are just feeding the bottom line. Worst part is we can say what we want about it, but not much we can do.

      i wonder what would happen if everyone just quit hauling coils out of alabama ? stick togeher,get em where it hurts in the wallet. you know like they are doing us !Huumm

    Boys and girls it’s story time. Picture this, Louisville, Kentucky, the Greenbelt Parkway. You’ve just pulled out of Roll & Hold with a 47555 lb. single coil you loaded on your brand new trailer. You loaded it shotgun, two chains “x” though the middle four more chains horseshoe and you threw a 4 in. strap over the top. You did not have to tarp it, you have a tarping system. You stop at a couple stop lights and and hit a third that’s gone yellow. No problem, your only going about 20 mph and you have plenty of time to stop. Greenbelt is a four lane and you see a couple cars coming up on your right side in that lane and they are stopping too. Suddenly you feel a pop, followed by a push forward, and you know with out a doubt, here comes a coil. You have the presence of mind to cut the wheel to the right pushing the momentum of the coil to roll off out the left side of the trailer in to the median. After you decide you are still alive and so are the others around you, it’s time to inspect the damage. A coil lies is the median, the bands have broke and it’s telescoped about 50 ft. and the trailer is a mess. Upon checking the trailer you notice your tie downs have snapped at the base, all of them have. The wrecker driver is a friend of your dispatcher and he and she have a conversation while loading the coil back on the trailer about the last coil he was involved with on just this same road the previous Thursday. Almost an identical circumstance, 45K single out of Roll & Hold only this time the coil landed on a car. The 22 year old nursing student was killed instantly. The driver of the truck had never hauled a coil before and wasn’t sure where to put the two chains he used to secure it. At least that is what he was saying when they were loading him into the back of the Sheriff’s Deputy’s car. The driver of that truck was 26 years old and has two small children, all the lumber he’d hauled his 4 years of driving had not prepared him for the coil he decided to load for his best friend who’s wife was in labor that morning. It’s only 10 bucks guys and if it helps prevent one case like this…
    By the way it was later learned your tiedowns were under a recall, and the trailer company repaired your trailer and paid the cargo claim. It’s a shame you did not know about the recall when you got behind the wheel, you meant no one any harm being the solid professional you are. Neither did the 26 year old doing 4 years in a Tennessee state prison.

    Get ready fellow drivers—next we will need I-beam, steel pipe, plastic pipe, plate steel and whatever the government can think of certification!! Just think of it!!! We are a never ending source of revenue!!!
